Drooping Eyelid
Eyelid Ptosis
Eyelid Ptosis is the abnormal drooping of the upper eyelid. The droop may be lower when the individual has been awake for too long due to tiredness of the muscles. Sometimes eyelid ptosis can be referred to as "lazy eye", but that's usually reserved for amblyopia. If the drooping upper lid is left untreated and becomes severe, conditions like amblyopia or astigmatism can occur. Children especially should be treated as soon as possible before eyelid ptosis interferes with their vision development.
Surgical correction may be necessary if aponeurotic and congenital eyelid ptosis is severe to the point of interfering with vision or for cosmetic reasons. Surgery is normally operated by opthamolic and reconstructive surgeons who specialize in the eylid. Treatment methods vary depending on the type of eyelid ptosis.
"Crutch" glasses or special scleral contact lenses can be used to support the droopy eyelid. If the cause of eyelid ptosis is a disease, then conditions will improve when the disease is treated.
